Site builder basics

Find your way around the drag and drop editor: panels, preview sizes, saving and publishing.

6 min read

Open Site builder from the dashboard. The page you're editing sits in the middle, exactly as shoppers will see it. Click anything on it to select it.

The left panel: what's on the page

  • Insert: every section and block you can add. Drag one onto the page, or click it to add it below what's selected.
  • Layers: an outline of the page. Drag rows to reorder, or click to select something that's hard to reach.
  • Pages: add, rename and hide pages, and switch which one you're editing.
  • Assets: everything you've uploaded. Drop files here to upload, then drag them onto the page.
  • History: earlier versions of your site, so you can go back.

The right panel: how it looks

  • Design: settings for whatever you've selected: text, images, buttons, layout, colours and spacing.
  • Theme: your site-wide colours, fonts, corner style and buttons. Switch themes without losing content.
  • Site: store name, logo, favicon, menu and footer, social links and SEO.
  • Shop: how products, prices and buy buttons look across the site.
  • Code: custom CSS for people who want it. Entirely optional.

Preview on every screen

Use the Desktop, Tablet and Phone buttons in the top bar to check each size. Sections reflow on their own; freeform canvases can have their own phone layout.

Saving and publishing

  • Your changes save as a draft automatically. The top bar shows Saved, Saving or a problem to fix.
  • Shoppers don't see anything until you press Publish. Until then, your live site stays as it was.
  • Undo and redo work across the whole session, and every publish is kept in History.

New to building sites? Start from a theme's starter template, then swap the words and pictures for your own. It's the fastest way to something that looks finished.
